Learn all the secrets of the Henta Sencha Asanoka

The Henta Sencha Asanoka is a deliciously sweet sencha produced by Mr Henta in Kirishima. The asanoka cultivar also produces nice cereal flavors in the tea

Taste

Discover the results of Nio Teas’ 4 step tea tasting method

To evaluate the flavor of the Henta Sencha Asanoka we look for a combination of the aroma and also how the tea interacts with the palate. Does it produce a dryness, acidity, minerality, sweetness or umami? We’ll also evaluate the texture of the tea, otherwise known as mouthfeel. Finally, for sencha tea, we’ll evaluate it based on how vegetal the taste profile is as this is a common characteristic throughout most sencha teas.

Step 1 - Observing the Appearance

The leaves of the sencha Asanoka are a dark shade of green, with a combination of tightly rolled needles and smaller leaf particles.

Step 2 - Assessing the Aroma

The aroma coming off the wet leaves is more subdued, with a stronger minerality and a light cereal note. There is also a hint of citrus and asparagus in the nose.

Step 3 - Tasting the Tea

The first sip of the Henta Sencha Asanoka draws you in with a mineral sweetness that soon transforms into a hint of pine. In the mid-palate, you begin to feel the early stages of an umami flavor developing, but it stops short to give way to a slightly drier, cereal finish.

Step 4 - Evaluating the sensation on the palate

The consistency of the sencha asanoka is rather thin, allowing you to easily notice the mouthwatering acidity and minerality as well as the light sweetness. The tea stops short of becoming sweet or umami, and rather plays off of this refreshing acidity and dryness.

100% Organically grown and Ethically Sourced

At Nio, we collaborate with farmers who cultivate tea plants using organic methods, free from the use of chemicals and pesticides. This practice not only enhances the flavor of the tea but also fosters the well-being of the tea fields where it is produced.

Based on our experience, tea fields that avoid pesticides and chemicals not only produce healthy tea plants but also foster a lively ecosystem for wildlife to flourish.

Nio Teas Unique Organically grown sourcing process

  • We individually taste test each tea
  • We communicate with the farmers about the production methods and how they make sure no pesticides are being used in the process
  • We visit the tea fields in person to assess the quality and attention to detail taken during the production process
  • We walk around the surrounding areas to observe the health of not only the tea fields but also the ecosystem nearby.

JAS Certified

JAS represents Japanese Agriculture Standards, which guarantee that products are grown without the use of chemicals or pesticides.

When selecting tea, we prioritize tea fields that are pesticide and chemical-free. We work alongside large tea farmers who can afford soil sampling and testing, and mandate that they provide the JAS certification.

However, we also collaborate with smaller tea farmers who have not yet acquired certification but still produce exceptional tea. In this, we accept the "pesticide-free" label. We like to provide opportunities for these smaller farmers, while still maintaining high standards across our product line

How to prepare the tea

To prepare the sencha asanoka, you can use a lower temperature water and a relatively short brewing time. 1 minute should be just enough time for the tea leaves to open up fully and release their flavor into the water.

  • Step 1

First, heat the water up to 70 degrees Celsius or 160 degrees Fahrenheit. This will be the perfect temperature for this sencha asanoka

  • Step 2

Add 5 grams of the henta asanoka sencha to your kyusu teapot and pour in 150ml of water.

  • Step 3

Allow the leaves to brew in the water for 1 minute without moving or shaking the teapot.

  • Step 4

Once the brewing time is complete, you can now pour your sencha asanoka, and the teapot will automatically filter out the tea leaves, ensuring that they do not get into your cup. Now it’s time to enjoy your delicious cup of sencha tea!

  • 2nd brew

Don't throw away your leaves after the first brewing! With the henta sencha asanoka you can get 2-3 additional infusions with the same leaves. Simply pour hot water into the teapot again and let the leaves steep for 20 seconds during each subsequent brewing.

  • Cold brew

Not only is the henta sencha asanoka a delicious choice for a hot cup of tea, but it also makes an excellent cold brew. To learn more about how to cold brew green tea, visit our blog and read the complete article.

Necessary teaware

To achieve the perfect cup of sencha asanoka, a kyusu teapot is essential. The fukamushi teapot is highly recommended for brewing these types of teas due to its circular metal strainer that prevents clogging and facilitates easy pouring. When the teapot clogs, it becomes challenging to pour, and the leaves may overbrew as they sit in the teapot for too long.

Alternative without teaware

In the absence of a teapot, we suggest using a tea strainer for the henta sencha asanoka. This handy tool strains the tea leaves as you pour, preventing overbrewing and ensuring that the leaves do not end up in your cup. It won’t work quite as well as the kyusu because the leaves aren’t given as much space, but it can suffice if you don’t have one.

Location of production and farmer

Information about the farm

Mr. Henta, a skilled farmer from Kirishima, Japan, is the producer behind  the henta asanoka tea. During our first meeting, he shared an abundance of knowledge regarding the intricacies of different tea plant species, also called cultivars.

What interested us was his vast comprehension of the diverse tea plant cultivars, each with its own characteristic flavors and growth patterns.

Despite operating on a small plot of land, Mr. Henta produces a total of 8 different tea plant varieties. He has become quite good at blending these cultivars to extract the best attributes of each one, creating each of his distinctive green tea blends.

Sourced in Kirishima

Japan

Kirishima, a southern region in Japan, is the birthplace of the Henta sencha asanoka. In contrast to the frigid winter weather prevalent in central Japan, Kirishima enjoys a mild subtropical climate. Consequently, it is simpler to cultivate more delicate tea plant species that produce intricate and sweet green teas like this one.

Cultivar and tea plant variety

As the name would suggest, the Henta Asanoka Sencha is made from the Asanoka cultivar. This tea plant is one of the more rare Japanese tea plant varieties, but it can produce delicious green teas.

This is, currently, my favorite Sencha. It has the full smell of the seashore while I enjoy it's thick texture. You can brew at 155f for a bit of nuttiness, or 165f for more grass. Wonderful tea, at a great price-point.

This tea has a nice vegetal quality to it and a nice balance of sweet, astringent & bitter. The taste lasts quite a long time on the tongue too. For the price I recently paid for its very good.

Customer video review of Henta Sencha Asanoka

I absolutely love this tea. It’s more umami and thick than a lot of green teas, which makes a really comforting tea. The flavor is more delicate and sweet on the second steep. Super high caffeine content and beautiful green color too.

Customer photo review of Henta Sencha Asanoka

Best sencha from Mr. Henta! I've tried Saemidori and Okumidori cultivar from Henta San, but Asanoka is the best for me. First infusion is more grassy, minty with a hint of nutty flavour and sweet , yellow green colour. Second infusion is more earthy, nutty more astringent taste, raw green colour. Asanoka - fragrance of the morning as they say in Japan. Excellent and refreshing tea! Thanks Nio Teas!

Tasting and aroma notes detected in different phases of Tasting: Dry leaf - kelloggs red berries cereal, banana flower, sticky rice dumplings, dried apricot, honey granola bar, cucumber peel, steamed tenderstem brocoli, tomato vines, freeze dried strawberries. Wet leaf - similar to dry leaf except more intense on the sour aroma notes with an additional note of dried seaweed and toasted sesame seeds and white soy arare. Texture - thick, warming, lingers for a while Taste - much more umami and savoury than the most recent sencha sample I tried. Has notes of tonkotsu broth, black sesame seeds, freshly steamed baozi, white soy arare and wakame seaweed, lovage and chicory. This is one for the people who love a more brothy, umami and savoury heavy sencha. A little trickier to brew if you want it strong without oversteeping but with more Japanese greens it's best to stick to a lower temperature of 60⁰C - 65⁰C. I also like that this particular sample yielded at least 6 or 7 good infusions in comparison to the Chiran Shizuku sencha I tried from Nio, nothing wrong with a short tea session and getting 2 or 3 very strong brews (I've heard that it's very common to discard the leaves after 2 or 3), but personally I think it's better value for your money when a tea can give you a little more than that, so you can enjoy it for longer. This might be one of my favourite samples so far.😌🫶🏻

Customer photo review of Henta Sencha Asanoka

This one has a lot of vegetal and umami notes early on with a refreshing, fruity aftertaste. As always, I adore the vibrant green liquor. For this tea I followed the brewing guide, and it was just about perfect, but a little hotter water wouldn't hurt. Excellent tea!

Henta Sencha Asanoka

Customer photo review of Henta Sencha Asanoka

Tea leaves are automatically more delicate looking. Also smells fruity and bright. So the lower brewing temp makes a lot of sense. 5 grams, 60℃, 60 seconds. Infusion 1: beautiful glow in the liquor. Gentle but assertive attack, with nice high notes. This is a lovely tea. Grassy. Slight umami this spirals down into a warm sweetness. 2nd infusion: the liquor color deepens and the pour slows in the teapot, as usually happens with Japanese teas. Fruity notes wake up in the second infusion. There's a sort of bright, chocolatey high note. Third infusion is that comically deep green, which comes out in a trickle. Rich and deep aftertaste.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

The Henta Asanoka is my current favorite from Nio teas (out of 5 tried) and it's quite reasonably priced. This one is vegetal, with the amazing ocean aroma I remember from my first good sencha many years ago, and no nuttiness. Solid and a great daily drinker.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

Sehr gute Qualität zum fairen Preis. Wassertemperatur: 60 Grad. Ziehzeit: 1,5 -2 min.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

For someone that drinks a LOT of Japanese green tea this is a great value.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

Excellent tea, smooth with strong umami flavour, very nourishing and energizing.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

I really like the flavor of this sencha tea. I've tried the Fukamushi Sencha Kagoshima Murasaki earlier and loved it. While the flavor is different it is really good.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

Best value for money, lower temp suit this tea the best 50~55°C , 1:30 min, typical sencha notes 👌

Henta Sencha Asanoka

That's my favourite sencha!😊🍵❣

Henta Sencha Asanoka

Good sencha. More umami, less grass than others I've tried; not a good nor bad thing from my perspective, just an observation for others looking to pick out a Sencha from Nio's lineup.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

A great everyday tea, especially for the price. I found I didn't get tired of this after drinking it a lot.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

First-rate website with clean design, easy ordering process. Excellent product. Good job keeping me informed on order and delivery status. Will definitely use again.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Henta Sencha Asanoka

This is a cheap but FULL bodied and very thick sencha with strong umami and vegetal flavor. Theres barely any dryness and astringency in this tea.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

Ich mag's grasig. Zum reduzierten Preis ein echtes Schäppchen.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

Love this delicate yet flavorful Henta Asanoka tea!

Henta Sencha Asanoka

For the price, this is the best Sencha I have tried so far. A nice dry texture.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

As we have hot summers here in Greece, Europe, I tried this Sencha of Mr. Henta as a cold infused tea : 5gr. of tea leaves with 500 ml. cold water for 6 hours in the refrigerator. Superb smooth and refreshing light taste of green leafy vegetables and an uplifting balance of sweet and bitter. I was eager to drink it every day ! Thank you for your hard work Mr. Henta.

Henta Sencha Asanoka

Excellent tea again, like all the teas i bought at Nio. Would buy again.
