Learn all the secrets of the Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea

Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea is a delicious osada tea produced up in the mountains of Shizuoka where the rocky soils add a pleasant minerality to the tea

Taste

Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea flavor chart

Discover the results of Nio Teas’ 4 step tea tasting method

To assess the quality of Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea, we examine both its texture and flavor. We consider whether it imparts a sense of dryness, sweetness, minerality, or acidity when tasted. Additionally, we evaluate the consistency of the tea and how it feels in the mouth, which is also known as mouthfeel. Lastly, when it comes to kukicha tea, we pay attention to its vegetal flavor, as this characteristic is commonly present in all types of kukicha green tea.

Step 1 - Observing the Appearance

The Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea is made with a combination of darker green leaves and light yellow stems.

Step 2 - Assessing the Aroma

The aromas coming off of the wet leaves of this osada tea are fruity and nutty, with notes of strawberries and almonds

Step 3 - Tasting the Tea

The Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea leads off strong with a pleasant, cereal sweetness followed by a light hay or straw note. There is also almost a roasted cashew nuttiness in the tea that is similar to a Kamairicha. The tea then transforms into a citrusy strawberry flavor profile and it leaves the palate with a tingling sensation from the strong minerality.

Step 4 - Evaluating the sensation on the palate

This Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea is thin in its texture, but varied in its taste profile. You get the sweetness, dryness, citrus, minerality and even umami all working together in synchrony to bring a bright, flavorful taste to the palate.

100% Organically grown and Ethically Sourced

At Nio, we like to collaborate with tea farmers who employ organic farming methods and steer clear of hazardous pesticides or chemicals. Our belief is that this approach to natural farming not only enriches the taste of the tea but also supports the health and longevity of the tea fields.

In our experience, tea plantations that use these organic farming techniques cultivate strong and flourishing tea plants while also nurturing a lively ecosystem that supports a variety of plant and animal species.

Nio Teas Unique Organically grown sourcing process

  • We conduct thorough taste tests in search of the best flavor profile for each tea.
  • We communicate with farmers so that we can learn about their organic and chemical-free farming practices.
  • We visit the tea fields in person to assess the quality of crops and manufacturing facilities.
  • We evaluate the surrounding ecosystem to make sure the plant and wildlife species are able to thrive in addition to the tea plants
JAS Japanese Agriculture Standards logo

JAS Certified

The Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea, along with some of our other teas, carries the JAS logo, which indicates adherence to the Japanese Agriculture Standards. These standards are implemented by the Japanese government and they ensure that tea plants are produced without the use of pesticides or chemicals.

Nio only partners with farmers who follow organic and pesticide-free farming practices. We require larger tea farmers to obtain JAS certification, which involves soil sampling and analysis.

For smaller tea farmers without the resources for soil testing, we accept the "pesticide-free" label to allow people to discover their teas while still maintaining our commitment to sustainability and quality.

How to prepare the tea

To prepare this Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea, you can use a lower temperature water and a shorter brewing time. Deep steamed teas like the Isagawa sencha loose leaf tea have smaller leaf particles so they infuse more quickly into the water.

    Step 3

Allow the tea leaves to brew in the water undisturbed for 1 minute, which allows the tea leaves to open up and release their flavor into the water.

    Step 4

After the brewing time is up, you can pour out your green tea and the teapot will automatically filter out the leaves so they don’t end up in your cup.Β Enjoy your tea!

    2nd brew

Don't throw out your tea leaves after the first brewing! The Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea can be brewed 2-3 more times. To reinfuse the tea, simply pour additional hot water into the teapot and allow the leaves to brew for just 20 seconds.

Necessary teaware

To achieve the best results when brewing Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea, the ideal tool to use is a Kyusu teapot. This teapot provides ample space for the leaves to expand and release their flavor into the water, and it also has a built-in strainer to separate the tea leaves as you pour.Β

Alternative without teaware

However, if you don't have a Kyusu teapot available, a tea strainer can be used as an alternative. Please note that since the tea leaves won't have as much space to expand in the strainer as they would in the teapot, the resulting flavor may not be as strong. Upgrading to a Kyusu teapot would be recommended for a more robust flavor, but in the meantime, a tea strainer will suffice.

Information about the farm

The Osada family has been growing tea in Shizuoka for generations, transforming their small family-run tea farm into a medium-sized enterprise that now employs many people in their community.

Even as they expand their tea production, they remain dedicated to preserving quality. To achieve this, they partner with small producers in the mountains to combine the meticulous attention to detail of a small tea field with the knowledge and resources of a larger operation. They have relocated their production facility to the mountains, closer to the source of their tea, to improve quality even further.

Sourced in Isagawa

Japan

The Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea is created in the organic village of Isagawa, a group of tea farmers who are dedicated to cultivating their tea without the use of harmful pesticides or chemicals.

In tea farming, it is not enough to ensure that the tea fields are free of pesticides; it is equally important to ensure that the surrounding land is also free of chemicals. This is why collaboration among Isagawa's farmers is crucial to ensure that all their tea fields meet the organic standards.

Cultivar and tea plant variety

The Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea comes from the Yabukita tea varietal, the most common tea plant variety or β€œcultivar” in Japan.

  • Yabukita

The Yabukita is a stonger cultivar, making it easier to grow in the rocky mountain soils of Shizuoka. This tea produces more of these vegetable flavors, which really go well with the strong minerality of the Osada Japanese Kukicha Tea.
