Taste

Discover the results of Nio Teas’ 4 step tea tasting method

In order to provide a comprehensive assessment of the Premium Chiran Matcha Green Tea, we conducted a thorough evaluation of both its texture and flavor. This involved carefully examining key factors such as dryness, sweetness, minerality, and acidity to determine the unique flavor profile of this exceptional tea. Additionally, we paid close attention to the tea's mouthfeel, taking note of its thickness and richness to ensure a consistent and satisfying drinking experience. Finally, we made sure to analyze the tea's vegetal flavor profile, which is a defining characteristic of all high-quality matcha varieties. By taking all of these factors into consideration, we are confident that our evaluation provides an accurate representation of the Premium Chiran Matcha Green Tea's exceptional quality and nuanced flavor profile.

Step 1 - Observing the Appearance

The matcha powder shows a strong green color, but it is on the lighter side.

Step 2 - Assessing the Aroma

The aroma as the powder is mixed with water is much more savory, with slightly sweet and spicy notes of cumin.

Step 3 - Tasting the Tea

The matcha draws you in with this smooth, velvety consistency before diving into this strong savory taste profile with notes of oatmilk and a hint of asparagus. The tea finishes off with a mineral sweetness that is quite cleansing on the palate. There is a tiny hint of dryness on the palate but it is very mild for a matcha.

Step 4 - Evaluating the sensation on the palate

This tea is relatively mild for a matcha, with a light sweetness, hint of minerality, touch of dryness but a good amount of this umami character. The mouthfeel is medium to thin, but it leaves the palate feeling satisfied.

100% Organically grown and Ethically Sourced

At Nio, we have made a conscious decision to only collaborate with tea farmers who prioritize organic and sustainable practices, refraining from the use of pesticides or chemicals. Through our extensive experience, we have discovered that this approach not only elevates the flavor of the tea, but also fosters the well-being of the tea fields as a whole.

We have observed that by embracing organic farming methods, tea farmers are able to produce outstanding green tea while also promoting biodiversity in the surrounding ecosystem. This allows for the proliferation of diverse plant and animal life, creating a harmonious environment that benefits both the tea plants and the natural habitat. At Nio, we are proud to support and partner with tea farmers who share our commitment to environmentally-friendly and health-conscious tea production methods.

JAS Japanese Agriculture Standards logo

JAS Certified

Some of our packaging proudly displays the JAS logo, which stands for Japanese Agriculture Standards, indicating that these teas are grown without the use of pesticides or chemicals, and are certified by the Japanese government. To ensure the organic integrity of the teas we sell, we require our larger partner farms to obtain JAS certification through rigorous soil sampling and testing.

We recognize that smaller tea farms may face challenges in obtaining JAS certification due to associated costs, So we accept these teas under the "pesticide-free" label, providing them with an opportunity to sell their products while maintaining our unwavering commitment to quality standards across our entire product line.

At Nio Teas, we are dedicated to promoting organic and sustainable tea production, and we take pride in our transparent approach to labeling and certification. We strive to bring you the finest teas while supporting both larger and smaller tea farms in their pursuit of environmentally-friendly and responsible farming practices.

Necessary teaware

To prepare the Premium Matcha Chiran Green Tea, you might want a few basic utensils to get the best results. Here are some details about each of the items you might want to consider:

  • Matcha bowl: A wide and shallow ceramic bowl that has enough room for whisking and enjoying your matcha. The shape of the bowl is designed to make whisking easier, and the wide opening helps you to appreciate the color, aroma and texture of the tea.
  • Bamboo whisk: Known as a chasen, this is a traditional Japanese tool made from bamboo. It has fine and delicate tines that are designed to create a frothy and creamy consistency when whisking your matcha. A high-quality whisk will be made with fine and tightly packed tines for better performance.
  • Chashaku: A chashaku is a small scoop made from bamboo that is used to measure the right amount of matcha powder for each serving. It's important to use the right amount of matcha for each serving, as too little or too much powder can affect the taste and texture of the tea.
  • Sifter: A sifter is a small fine mesh sieve that is used to sift the matcha powder before whisking it. This helps to remove any clumps or lumps in the powder, ensuring a smooth and even texture in the final cup of matcha.

Japan

The Chiran Matcha is cultivated in the quaint town of Chiran, nestled in the southernmost part of Kyushu, Japan. This idyllic region enjoys a mild subtropical climate and nutrient-rich volcanic soils, thanks to the volcanic activity in the area. The mild winters further contribute to the ideal growing conditions for delicate tea plant varieties, resulting in green teas with a lighter and sweeter taste profile. The warm climate of Chiran imparts unique characteristics to the Chiran Matcha, making it truly exceptional.

Cultivar and tea plant variety

The Premium Chiran Matcha is made with a combination of the Okumidori and Asatsuyu cultivars.

  • Okumidori

Okumidori is often used to add smoothness to the flavor profile of the matcha, which really rounds out any of the bitterness you might experience.

  • Asatsuyu

Asatsuyu is known for being one of the sweeter tea cultivars. The name means “clear green” and it is known as a natural gyokuro because the flavor is naturally sweet even without shading.
